This rare bas relief is a direct and charming rendition of the famous Taos church. Its playful quality is reminiscent of Van Gogh’s paintings of churches. A very different view of the famous church; rather than depicting the back view of the massive building as countless artists before and after him have done, Barela chose a head on view of the front entrance including the multitude of crosses and bell towers..in short, all those aspects of the church which are most meaningful to Hispanics.
