....Marriage demonstrates how difficult marriage can become. The sculpture seems to suggest that after marriage a man continues to be guided by sexual desire, while a woman’s concern turns to money. The work undoubtedly was influenced by Barela’s bitter view of his marriage and the adversarial relationship that evolved between him and Remedios (his wife).
